Removing Mold & Mildew from Your Basement
One of the problems with flooded, leaky or humid basements is the growth of
mold. Mold is a huge health risk to many adults and children. Mold can cause
cold like symptoms, respiratory problems, allergic reactions, a sore throat,
water eyes as well as other uncomfortable reactions. If you have a basement
that recently experienced a leak, seepage or flood, it is important to
remove the mold and mildew growing in your basement.
Mold and mildew grows in any area that is dark, damp with a humidity of
about 70% or more and any area that was water logged for more than a day
before drying. Materials such as concrete can support mold growth and due to
the porous features of concrete, mold can be extremely difficult or close to
impossible to remove all mold from it.
If you find mold on your basement foundation walls, floors or within cracks,
you can try to get rid of it with an ammonia compound. Make sure you have
good ventilation when using ammonia and it does help to wear a mask as well
as wet down the area that will be cleaned. Wetting down the area will
prevent mold spores from traveling all over the basement. There are also
many home products for mold removal that are easy to work with. Usually a
few sprays of a product and a good scrubbing brush will remove the mold.
Another way you can remove mold from your basement is to use a sealant that
has a mold preventer included. These products usually kill most molds on
contact and prevent mold from growing back. There are several products on
the market that not only seal but kill mold. You can usually pick up these
products at most home improvement centers.
If your basement has experience mold, make sure that you try to remove the
source of water seepage and leaks to prevent further mold growth. It won't
pay to spend a weekend removing mold only to find a week later that an old
basement leak is back again with more mold growth. Contact a professional to

usually disappear as well.

the growth immediately. You do not want the mold to spread throughout the
