Tips for Setting up a Basement Fitness Room
by David Cooper
One of the great things about transforming your basement into a fitness
room is that it does not normally take a whole lot of construction to do so.
After all, most basements are wide-open spaces with concrete floors -
perfect for gym equipment and a workout area.
If you do not want to use the entire basement for a fitness room, you can
always divide the basement into several sections. This can be done easily by
using large book cases or shelving units set up back to back.
One of the first things that you need to do is to make sure you have
waterproofed your basement and that you do not have a problem with poor
ventilation. Having moisture in your basement with poor ventilation is an
invitation for mold and mildew to develop in your basement. This can be a
health hazard, especially because you'll be breathing in deeply whenever you
are exercising.
Another risk with having poor ventilation and air circulation is that you
will not have good air quality when you're exercising. This could affect
your workout.
Another consideration that you need to keep in mind is that you need to have
some type of padding on your floor. Exercising on a concrete floor without
any type of padding can damage your feet. In severe cases, you could even
fracture some of the small bones in your foot. It could even contribute to
stress fractures in your shins.
If you do not want to pad or put carpeting down on the entire floor in your
basement, you could easily do one of two things.
- Purchase a workout mat that you use every single time you exercise.
This can be either a small mat that is only 2' x 3' or it could be a
larger mat that covers a different amount of space.
- You can also purchase foam squares from major retailers that you stick
to the concrete flooring. This can be an excellent option if you plan on
keeping the basement area at the workout area, but if you think you might
change your mind in the future and want to use the basement for a
different purpose, you might want to consider a less permanent option.
Having mirrors on one wall of your basement fitness center can help to
brighten up the room and it can also make your workout area seem larger. You
can purchase mirrored panels and simply stick them up on the wall. This is a
very inexpensive option.
Use bright colors when you're painting your fitness room. It will help to
brighten your mood and it will also help the room seem larger.
Make sure that your basement fitness room has plenty of light. Exercising in
your basement without enough light will make you feel like you are
exercising in a dungeon. This is not conducive to an energetic workout.
If you keep these tips in mind while you are designing your new fitness
room, you will have a lot of enjoyment from your new indoor gym.
