Tips for Finishing Your Basement as a Girl's Room
by David Cooper
Choosing to use your basement as a room for the kids can be the most fun you
have in choosing a theme for a room in your house. The reason is because
basements are not like the rest of your house. This is not a room that everyone
will see. The basement can be your child's Fortress of solitude, her own
personal space that can reflect the person that she truly is and what she really
wants.
One of the great things about using a basement is that a basement is normally
much larger than other rooms in the house. This means that your child can have a
large bed and still have room for plenty of other furniture. Unlike some
children's bedrooms, having a basement bedroom for your child means that she
could easily have the largest bedroom in the house. She could be the envy of all
of her friends.
Here are some ideas to help you design the perfect basement bedroom for your
daughter.
- While you want to make your daughter's bedroom unique, make sure that
you keep safety in mind. This is especially important if you have a
younger child. Consider using thick carpeting or soft surface mats.
- Make sure that you have cable and Internet connections for your
daughter’s room or you will find that she does not spend much time there.
- Painting is one of the easiest ways to redecorate. By adding a coat of
paint you can have a room that feels like it is completely new. For a
girl's room, you need to make sure that the paint you choose is feminine
and light. Even if you have a daughter that is older and requests a dark
color such as navy blue or a deep purple, paint the trim and doors white
or ivory. This will give the room a feminine touch, even though she has a
preference for dark color.
- Make sure when you are painting the trim to use a glossy paint. Don't
forget the closet doors, if you have any. Because you are painting in the
basement, allow the trim to dry for several days before you attempt to
paint the walls. This is because the trim needs to be dry enough so that
you can put tape on it without the risk that you will pull off the fresh
paint from the trim.
- After you paint the walls and you have allowed them to dry for several
days, you can add a unique touch by applying wall stickers to the walls.

would be perfect for your daughter.
- If you have more than one child sharing the room, you can use large
bookcases in order to create a divider down the center of the room. By
doing this, you can avoid the expense of having to create a wall but you
can save numerous arguments because each child will have her own living
space.
