Inexpensive Ways to Remodel Your Basement
by David Cooper
If you are trying to redo your basement, but you do not want to spend a lot
of money; here are some ideas to help you transform your basement without
breaking the bank.
- The first thing you need to do is to jot down some ideas about what
you would like to do with your basement. Before you start anything, you
need to make sure that you have a plan.
- Painting is always the easiest and quickest way to transform a room. I
simply investing in a little bit of paint, you can perform a facelift on
any room. Make sure that you use a glossy paint on the trim and on any
doors that you might have. If you are trying to have a masculine look for
the room, go with darker trim on a lighter shade for the walls. If you are
trying to go for a more feminine look, then choose white or beige trim for
whatever wall color you use. Even if you have a dark color for your walls,
having white or beige trim will feminize it dramatically.
- Change the color of the carpet or other floor covering. If you really
want to create a different look, try to use the opposite of what was
already there. For example, if you had light-colored carpeting before,
with a much darker shade.
- Install shelving units or bookcases along the walls. You can either
use these to hold books, or you can decorate with pictures, plants, or any
other type of home decor.
- Transform one wall of the basement into a mirror. This can make the
whole room huge.
- Use book cases to decide the room into different sections. These can
change the entire look and feel of the room. This can be especially
helpful if you have more than one child and each child wants to have a
separate area to play in. It is also very effective if you want to have
one area for a study or office and another area as a family area. The best
thing about using bookcases in order to divide your living space is that
you can always easily move the bookcases around and redefine how the space
is used.
- Transform the entire theme of your basement. For example, if you had
your basement finished off and used as a play area, paint it and put in
some additional furniture and shelving and transform it into a home
theater. Transform an office into a home gymnasium. Changing the looks of
the room and what is used for will make dramatic difference.
You do not have to go to a great deal of expense in order to redesign your
basement. As long as your basement is a finished one, then just by making a few
cosmetic changes you can make a big difference. Often it is simply a matter of
investing in a few gallons of paint and a weekend in order to transform a room.
