by David Cooper
Having a finished basement as a child's room can make a huge difference in
the comfort level of the rest of the family members. By finishing your basement
area, you can literally add hundreds of square feet to the livable space in your
house.
Not only this, but the fact that a basement that has been transformed into a
child's room often feels like it is a separate part of the house. This can
foster a sense of healthy independence in your child. Most kids thoroughly
enjoying having a finished basement as their bedroom.
Here are some fantastic ideas for finishing your basement as a boy's room.
- While you don't want to have colors that are too dark, make sure that
you have a masculine theme for the room. Don't have a generic beige or
white for the walls. Stick with blues, greens, or maroon in order to give
it a masculine appeal.
- Choose a theme that your son is interested in, but make sure that you
keep in mind how long the theme will be appealing to him. For example,
Blue’s Clues might be fantastic when he is 3, but the time he is seven or
eight he might be growing out of it. It might be better to choose a theme
that is a little bit more mature side that he will enjoy it for longer.
- Another idea is to choose a generic theme, but one that is appealing
to most boys. For example, sports themes are quite popular - even if your
son may not play that particular sport. Having a generic theme such as
basketball or football can easily carry your son through his teenage
years.
- Design your son’s room from the point of view of his friends. What
would make his friends want to spend time there? Perhaps a big TV? Maybe
an awesome stereo? An entertainment unit with a videogame system? Since
you are going to have a large living space, why not make it the coolest
place in the neighborhood? Make your son's room the place where everybody
in the neighborhood wants to hang out.
- While a race car bed might be cool when your son is five, it probably
won't last too much longer than that. It would be better to invest in an
impressive bedroom suit than to spend money on something that will lose
its appeal quickly.
- Use recessed lighting whenever possible. Not only will this take up
less space and make the ceiling seem higher, recessed lighting is much
harder to break when boys horse around and wrestle.
- Install some type of intercom system so that you do not have to yell
down the stairs in order to speak to your child. This will also make it
easier for your son to contact you if he needs you in an emergency.
You can create an incredible basement bedroom for your son without a huge
budget. Just use your imagination.
